The earliest rocking furniture were created for babies as cradles. But starting in the 18th century, people modified existing chairs by adding skates to them. Windsor rocking chairs were made in Philadelphia in the 1740s.

I thought I was the only one interested in things like this. LOL! our little rocker looks like an A Life of Faith rocker with the cushion missing. Very nice!

Wow, love your rocking chair. My friend has Amish made dining room chairs with the exact same back. I think it is called a wheat backed chair because the rods look like wheat that is shocked in the field and tied in the middle. Just beautiful.
