Well, since I'm quarantined at home because of a global pandemic, I finally found the time to look at my American Girl collection. I haven't looked at this blog in years, so I apologize for all the broken links. Life's has been busy the last seven years: got a new house, got two new kids, and got a new job.

Anyway, it's been a joy introducing American Girl to my older daughter (though my younger one is more interested in banging on pots and crawling). We've been looking at Marie Grace and Cecile collection together. I've also been exploring Etsy and found this lovely 1920s dress by Beky's Doll Clothes on Etsy.
I just love the costumes already:

In the novel, Victor Hugo conspicuously, colorfully overdressed Cosette to the point of bad taste to illustrate that Valjean was overindulging her, and that Cosette, with no mother or other girls to guide her, was highly isolated from the rest of society. I think only in the French version of Les Miserables do they really capture that plot point in the dress.

But most years Les Miserables ran on Broadway, Cosette wore what I called the doily dress:

Not until the 25th Anniversary Les Miserables Concert, do we see something with way bigger sleeves, and in a color wealthy, young girl would have liked.

Claire Danes as Cosette in the Liam Neeson version. (I can't believe the little cherub is now portraying a wild-eyed, fouled-mouth stalker/CIA agent on the show Homeland.)

Virginia Ledoyen as Cosette in the French 2000 mini-series. I love the dress she is wearing. But um, can I just say I also have a girl-crush on her? Something about the French...

More costume photos from the movie can be seen here.

Here's a 1830s dress that Cosette might wear.

Description from the original listing written by ThimblesandAcorns: "By the 1830s sleeves became a new focal point. They grew to exaggerated
proportions and combined with the large bell shaped skirts they worked
together to further diminished the appearance of the waistline. There
were at least a dozen different styles of sleeves for day wear with
romantic names such as "Cavalier", "Donna Maria", "Sultan" and "Medici".
This dress features a Gigot style sleeve also known by its
less refined name as the leg-o-mutton sleeve. The fabric is a 19th
Century reproduction print and the skirt is calf length, which was the
appropriate length for a pre-teen girl during the Victorian Era."

Photographed without a crinoline...
Apparently, the prettier Mary had been the mistress of Henry VIII before he became involved with Anne. The smarter Anne though didn't want to become a mistress. She wanted to become queen.

My favorite Philippa Gregory novels are A Respectable Trade (about the 18th century slavery) and The Virgin Earth (about early colonial Virginia). I met Philippa Gregory once and had her sign my copies of The Other Boleyn Girl and The Constant Princess, when the new Natalie Portman movie first came out the latter book was first published. Do you have a favorite novel by Gregory?

From the movie, "The Other Boleyn Girl":
http://www.dolliesdressmaker.com
I love Cindy's unique designs, such as her sacque-back and caraco gowns, because they look like they were inspired by Janet Arnold, who had created a pattern book based on real 18th century English gowns. Her pretty and sturdy panniers are also sold at reasonable prices and give the gown historically accurate shapes. She also reproduces dresses that you might see in the American Girl book illustrations, such as Felicity's brown church gown.

Heirloom Doll Designs (Sdls275)
http://myworld.ebay.com/sdls275/
I've seen her 18th century gowns go for as high as $300. They look like exact replicas of museum pieces, replete with decorated flat straw hats and multiple stomachers.

Doll Clothes of Yore
http://www.yoreclothes.com/
I appreciate Emily's designs because she attempts to use serpentine shapes and ruffles that were popular in the 18th century. She also is willing to experiment with draping, and has created lovely polonaise-style gowns.

Terri's Touch
http://www.etsy.com/shop/terristouch
Terri's gowns are simple, elegant, and always well-made. She also makes caraco style gowns.
Jane Austen is my favorite author. I have read every piece of work she has ever written and watched all the movies and television series based on her works. Of course, if you are looking for other literature that are similar to Jane Austen or set during the Napoleonic Wars, you should check out the following:

anything by Georgette Heyer (regency love stories galore, but more on the fluffy side)

Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South (love story is similar to Pride and Prejudice, but it's set in a textile town in the 1850s and has more social commentary about the plight of the working class)

Patrick O'Brian's Post Captain (similar to Persuasion, but told from the perspective of a British naval captain and a surgeon who are fighting and spying in the Napoleonic Wars)

Susanna Clarke's Mr. Norell and Jonathan Strange (set in regency England, but in an alternate universe with magic; it's a mix of Jane Austen, Patrick O'Brian, and Harry Potter)

C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series (about a young British officer's naval adventures)

Bernard Cromwell's Sharpe series (about the Peninsular Wars, but told through the perspective of Richard Sharpe, a common solder promoted to the rank of a commissioned officer, who despite his intelligence and fighting prowess, continuously faces class prejudice)

My Favorite Regency Designers
If you would like your dolls to do some time traveling or get Lost in Austen, I highly recommend the following seamstresses. I only recommend people's work I've seen up close, and all of their outfits are spectacular.

Thimbles and Acorns
http://www.etsy.com/shop/ThimblesandAcorns
Shari's gowns are always meticulously researched and beautifully constructed. I think her patterns are the most historically accurate and unique.

Vintique Designs
http://www.etsy.com/shop/VintiqueDesigns
Linda's gowns have delicate, ethereal quality to them that fits well with regency aesthetics. Her embellishments of lace make her dresses extra special.

Tomi Jane's Doll Times
http://www.etsy.com/shop/dolltimes
I think of Tomi Jane's outfits as regal and rich, fit for any Miss Bingley.

Dollies' Dressmaker
http://www.dolliesdressmaker.com
If you ever come across Cindy's haute couture designs on Ebay, just snatch them up because they are amazing.

Threads of Troy
http://www.etsy.com/shop/ThreadsOfTroy
Karen's designs are simple and elegant.

Terri's Touch
http://www.etsy.com/shop/terristouch
Terri's regency dresses don't vary because they follow the 1820s Josefina pattern. However, the dresses are always perfectly constructed and very affordable.

Doll Clothes of Yore
http://www.yoreclothes.com/
Emily offers a beautiful spencer coat and bonnet that would please any Jane Austen fan.
They mostly got sweets (ice cream, cookies, candy) and savory munchies of questionable nutritional value (hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken). However, after a bit of lecturing, they also selected delectable vegetables and fruit, and even a full salad. I am a repeat customer at these three food shops:

Minnie Kitchen
Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/MinnieKitchen
Janet is a real pleasure to work with and is quite creative. Her specialty is 1/12 scale, but please don't hesitate to ask about scaling anything in her shop to the American Girl doll size of 1/3. She's particularly good with texture and painting (see the potatoes below). I've gotten scones, a cream puff and strawberry shortcake, cheese sets, vegetables, and fruit from her shop.

Pippaloo
Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/pippaloo
Teresa's food are always perfectly scaled. Her works have a polished and clean rounded feel to them. If you you're wishing pieces from an official American Girl girl set such as Felicity's Party Treats, you should inquire about a custom replica, as she is an AG collector herself and is probably familiar with the originals.

The Tea Cottage
Ebay: http://myworld.ebay.com/golfkoby123/
This artist makes her food in batches of 5-10. I don't think she does custom orders, so if you see something in her shop that you like, you should buy it right away. What I like about her work is she bases her projects on recipes from the American Girl recipe books or from the stories. So I've gotten Samantha's breakfast, Josefina's Bizcochitos, and Julie's sloppy Joes from her shop. I also just like to check out her shop for adorable setups, some of them complete with miniature newspapers and floral arrangements!
After examining a few paintings from the period and the gorgeous costumes from the new Showtime series, The Borgias, I realize now that I should have oriented the ties on the sleeves to the bottom or sides and puffed out the white under dress a little more.

The Italian Renaissance was one of my favorite history classes in college. Ah, the humanists, the art, and the wonderfully distinct city-states. Unfortunately, it was also a very corrupt time in church history, and most of Italy was fractured into clans, despite it's immense wealth from trade.

I have finished watching Showtime's The Borgias via Amazon streaming. I must admit Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI is deliciously evil, and I do enjoy the plotting of Cesare Borgia (pope's son), who was famous for being the model of Machiavelli's prince. The actress that plays Lucrezia Borgia (the pope's daughter) is very beautiful. She's a bit too innocence, but you can see why her contemporaries described her as seeming to "walk on air". SHe has an ethereal, other-worldly quality to her.

Whatever you though, don't watch the Netflix version Borgias: Faith and Fear, which is a totally different production from Showtime and quite terrible. I'm not usually a prude, but yeesh. I know during the Renaissance, the cardinals were a bit power hungry, but I doubt they would have had open fist fights. The scene in which Cardinal Borgia becomes Pope Alexandra VI, he basically looks up (at God?) screaming "YES!!!!! FINALLY!!!!" Then he turns to other cardinals and says "Sorry, I just had to do that." Ok, I exaggerate. It was pretty bad though. They portray Lucrezia Borgia is an airhead, which makes me grimace since the real historical figure spoke and wrote in five languages, including Latin and Greek and became a power wielder in her own right. Even if they didn't follow the historical figure real character, the screen writers could have dived into literature, portraying her as a femme fatale.
